Abstract

This paper explores the use of mugshots in prison museums and considers this from an ethical perspective. Drawing on work by authors such as Susan Sontag, John Tagg and Erving Goffman it argues that mugshots are images of suffering but they fail to recognised as such. Our failure to view these images in that way is reflective of wider failings to recognise the harm and suffering of incarceration.
