Abstract

This paper will look at how contemporary artists are hacking and using analogue radio technology to make gallery work. It will consider my recent radio art work: a transmitting radio book Spiritual Radio (2014), transmitting pots Dream Vessels (2015) and Tree Radio (2015) a broadcasting tree, and will consider how this can be framed as 'post-digital' practice. Artistic exploration of the ' making' side of radio unmasks analogue technology as simple electronics, following in the footsteps of ham and electronic enthusiasts and amateur electronic magazines. The origins of this an artistic activity can be traced to Tetsuo Kogowa's 'Mini FM' parties of the 1980s, his influence can be seen in Colette Urban's Its On Your Head, It's in your Head (1992) which comprised of six fake-fur hats concealing a radio receiver and transmitter; participants would walk around public spaces broadcasting a story being read from the gallery “the intention of the piece was to examine the frontier between private and public space” (Bull, 1992, pp. 161-166) and indicated the shift from large public broadcasts to micro radio audience in an intimate personal settings which has driven my own recent practice.
