This chapter considers current investigative practice in the context of the art, craft and science debate. The historical context to these differing characterisations is also explored. The application and influence of science (as well as scientific research) to investigative practice is discussed, in relation to investigative systems and processes. Whilst the art, craft, science triune has served useful, the chapter reframes the focus by concentrating upon modern forensic investigators within the professional paradigm, who, to varying degrees use a mixture of all three. The emergence of an evidenced base research agenda, in partnership between police and academics. promises an exciting future. This agenda, together with professionalisation is critically discussed in the light of developing practice.
