Abstract
A discussion of the ways in which composers set the remarkable varied texts of their poets. Some were written by the composers themselves; others used the words of some of Britain's finest wordsmiths. The results were a testament to the concern of this repertoire with appropriate word-setting, though sometimes - as in Horsley's "Lo, On Yon Long-Resounding Shore" - the music proved somewhat frail for the weight of the words it was asked to carry.
