Abstract

Wolfgang Ebner (1612–65) published a set of 36 keyboard variations in 1648. These appear to have had a direct influence on Bach's 'Goldberg' variations, and also, through their republication in Vienna in 1818, on Archduke Rudolph's 40 Variations on a Theme by Beethoven, and Beethoven's own 'Diabelli' variations. Furthermore, Ebner's theme, composed by Emperor Ferdinand III, is strikingly echoed in Schubert's Impromptu in C minor, D.899 No. 1..
